i've always had the OLD Fashioned washing machines.

start the water in the washer first, after about two minutes put the detergent in the water, let fill some more then load the cloths. maybe you need a better detergent than you're using, like tide (expensive) but one of the best you can get. wash whites in hot water, colored clothes in warm. I only use cold for each, but i'm happy with the results i get.

there is usually a place at the top of the machine for adding bleach, it lets the bleach go to the bottom of the tub where the water already is and therefore the bleach doesn't have direct contact with the cloths. my old kind has a place in the TOP of the agitator to put fabric softener into. once there the softener stays there until the washer has emptied and gets ready to spin, the spinning centrifical force ejects the softener into the load of laundry. the washer then fills again and mixes with the softener. agitates for a couple of minutes then empties again and spins the water out and shuts off.

do this and you won't stain anything.

good luck to ya

try the tide, don't mix whites with colors.(i'm sure you do that but threw that in just in case. How to wash clothes in a top loading washing machine the old kind?
The machines must be ancient! Do they have detergent, bleach and fabric softener dispensers? It not, here is what you do; start filling the machine with water and add your detergent to allow the detergent to begin disolving, swish it around with your hand if you want. Add the clothes by folding or putting them around the center agitator. You can't add as many clothes to a top load washer as you can a front loader. I would suggest maybe 5 pairs of jeans in one load, 7 or 8 shirts in another load, 4 or 5 sweatshirts in another load, delicates like underwear and bras you can add quite a few of those because they are very light fabric...probably a weeks worth of undies and bras would be no problem. Towels maybe 5 or 6 of those in one load. If the washer is small, wash one bed sheet and the pillow cases and then the other bed sheet and maybe a couple of bath towels in the other load. Make sure that you use water that is hot enough. Towels should always be washed on warm or hot, sheets the same. Jeans warm, shirts warm or cold, underwear/bras lukewarm or cold. If you want to add bleach, let the machine begin the wash cycle and then slowly pour the measured amount of bleach into the water while the agitator is going. Fabric softener should be added the same way when the rinse cycle begins. I have even taken my fabric softener and mixed it with some warm water in a cup or glass and added it that way to prevent the spotting the sometimes happens. What you are looking for when the agitator is going is the clothing moving from top to bottom fairly smoothly and quickly. Stand and watch the washer as its agitating, find a sock or shirt and then watch to see how long it takes for it to work its way from the top/down to the bottom/back to the top again. If it takes a long time, you have overloaded the washer. If it is moving pretty quick, you have the right amount of clothes in the washer. If you have a well stocked grocery store near you, they may have the Downy Fabric Softener ball available for purchase. This is a handy little ball that you dump the softener into and during the rinse cycle, it opens up and deposits the softener without it getting the clothes spotty. I hope I have helped.
